Granta announces Best Young American Novelists list

UK literary journal Granta has revealed its Best Young American Novelists list for 2017, which honours 21 writers under the age of 40.

The writers on the list are:

  • Halle Butler
  • Emma Cline
  • Joshua Cohen
  • Mark Doten
  • Jen George
  • Rachel B. Glaser
  • Lauren Groff
  • Yaa Gyasi
  • Garth Risk Hallberg
  • Greg Jackson
  • Sana Krasikov
  • Catherine Lacey
  • Ben Lerner
  • Karan Mahajan
  • Anthony Marra
  • Dinaw Mengestu
  • Ottessa Moshfegh
  • Chinelo Okparanta
  • Esmé Weijun Wang
  • Claire Vaye Watkins.

The list features a majority of women writers (12 women to 9 men), and includes authors of recent notable releases such as Emma Cline (The Girls, Vintage) and Lauren Groff (Fates and Furies, Windmill Books) as well as awards finalists Yaa Gyasi (Homgoing, Penguin) and Ottessa Moshfegh (Eileen, Vintage).

Published once a decade, the list was decided on by authors Patrick DeWitt, A M Homes, Kelly Link, and Ben Marcus.

Fiction by the 21 writers will be published in the magazine’s 139th issue, and a selection can be viewed on the Granta website here.
