Melbourne’s Books in Print to close in June

Books in Print in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern will close at the end of June.

The store has been run by Chris Harrington and Deborah Holland for the past 28 years.

Harrington told Books+Publishing that he and Holland decided not to take up a new lease for the store, which is located close to two other bookstores, Jeffreys Books and Readings Malvern. The couple plans to retire when the store closes.

Harrington said he and Holland began bookselling in London in the 1970s and have ‘over 80 years of bookselling between us’, while several of their staff have qualified for long-service leave.

Harrington said a key part of the shop’s success has been a ‘really stable team’, strong customer service and a connection to the local community.

The store recently held a special event for its book club members, which he said ‘brought all of our customers out of the woodwork’.
