In the UK, the shortlist for the Orwell Prize for Books 2017 has been announced. The titles shortlisted for the £3000 (A$5547) prize for political writing are:

  • Citizen Clem (John Bew, Quercus)
  • The Seven (Ruth Dudley Edwards, Oneworld)
  • All Out War (Tim Shipman, HarperCollins)
  • Island Story (J D Taylor, Repeater)
  • And the Sun Shines Now (Adrian Tempany, Faber)
  • Another Day in the Death of America (Gary Younge, Guardian Faber).

The annual award is presented to a work that comes closest to George Orwell’s ambition ‘to make political writing into an art’. The Bookseller reports that two thirds of this year’s shortlist is ‘made up of titles from independent publishers’. Shortlists were also announced for the Orwell Prize for Journalism and the Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils 2017, with the winners to be announced on 15 June.
