Durneen wins UK award for best short story collection

UK author Lucy Durneen’s short story collection Wild Gestures, which is published by Adelaide-based small press MidnightSun, has won the prize for best short story collection in the 2017 Saboteur Awards.

The awards are organised by the UK’s Sabotage Reviews website, which publishes ‘dynamic commentary and reviews of small-scale and ephemeral literature’. Nearly 4300 votes were received for this year’s awards.

Sabotage Reviews wrote that voters praised Durneen’s collection as ‘a tremendous work of humanity at its best and worst, its strongest and most vulnerable’. ‘Every story is packed with beautiful, unexpected and original imagery—to the point of enabling the reader to perceive a fresh perspective on their own life predicaments,’ said Sabotage Reviews.
