New Maurice Sendak picture book discovered

A new picture book by the late Maurice Sendak and his frequent collaborator Arthur Yorinks has been discovered in Sendak’s archives, reports Publishers Weekly.

Presto and Zesto in Limboland was created in 1990 to ‘accompany a London Symphony Orchestra performance of Leoš Janáček’s Rikadla, a 1927 composition that set a series of nonsense Czech nursery rhymes to music’.

‘I read it in disbelief,’ said Sendak’s longtime editor and publisher Michael di Capua. ‘What a miracle to find this buried treasure in the archives. To think something as good as this has been lying around there gathering dust.’

Yorinks, who previously collaborated with Sendak on The Miami Giant (1995) and Mommy? (2006), has made minor revisions to the text.

The picture book will be published by HarperCollins in the US in 2018.
