First authors announced for Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2017

The first authors have been announced for this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, which runs from 25-29 October in Ubud, Bali.

Among the international guests are Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin, Canadian novelist Madeleine Thien, Malaysian author and activist Marina Mahathir, and English food writer and cook Fuchsia Dunlop, while Australian guests include Saroo Brierley, Tim Flannery, Robert Dessaix and Kate Holden.

The local line-up includes journalist Leila S Chudori, author and social commentator Seno Gumira Ajidarma, the puppet theatre group Papermoon and dancer-choreographer Eko Supriyanto.

This year’s festival will feature more than 150 speakers from 30 countries under the theme of ‘Origins’. ‘At a time of global unrest and political turmoil, the theme challenges audiences to consider the biggest picture—to contemplate our connections as a collective humanity extending across people, the planet and periods of time,’ the festival organisers said.

The festival also announced that Flannery and Holden will lead this year’s literary cruise off the Komodo Islands. The cruise, which is open to eight guests, runs from 31 October to 4 November.
