Junot Díaz pens new picture book

In the US, Pulitzer Prize-winner Junot Díaz has written a picture book for young readers, reports the New York Times.

The book, Islandborn, will be illustrated by Leo Espinosa and will be published in the US in March 2018 by Penguin US imprint Dial Books for Young Readers.

It is Díaz’s first book for younger readers, and his first book since This is How You Lose Her (Faber) in 2012 and only fourth authored book overall.

Islandborn originated as a promise Díaz made to his goddaughters around 20 years ago to write them a story featuring characters like them, Dominican girls living in the Bronx in New York City. In the book, a young girl assembles a picture of the island where she was born—but which she doesn’t remember—from the different accounts of her relatives.

Díaz told the New York Times that he’s ‘always’ had the book ‘over my head’. ‘[My goddaughters] asked me if I could write them something, and foolishly, I said yes … Behind their request was this longing for books and stories that resonated for them and included them, and opened a space where they could be protagonists in the world.’
