Black Inc. to publish the ‘Cook’s Companion’ of mental health

Black Inc. will publish Mental: Everything You Never Knew You Needed to Know about Mental Health, a guidebook to mental health by psychiatrist and broadcaster Steve Ellen and comedian and writer Catherine Deveny.

The book was acquired by publisher Chris Feik, who describes it as a ‘unique, irreverent and timely book’.

Mental is for people contending with depression, anxiety and more serious forms of mental illness and wanting a useful, approachable overview of diagnosis, seeking help and treatment,’ said Feik. ‘It’s also for family and friends who want to know how to proceed and offer support.’

Deveny hopes the book will become a go-to resource for people struggling with mental illness. ‘In the same way everyone has Stephanie Alexander’s The Cook’s Companion in their home and consider it the go-to “bible”, my dream is that Mental becomes the Cook’s Companion of mental health,’ said Deveny.

Rights to the book were recently sold into China in a pre-empt to China Renmin University Press.

Mental will be published in Australia in March 2018.
