Writers among the recipients of the 2017 New Zealand Arts Awards

A number of writers and illustrators are among the 11 recipients of the 2017 New Zealand Arts Awards, presented by the New Zealand Arts Foundation.

Poet Hera Lindsay Bird was one of three recipients of the New Generation Award, worth NZ$25,000 (A$22,319) each. The New Generation Award is presented to artists with ‘assured potential, their work is exciting and they show outstanding promise’.

Children’s book illustrator and author Donovan Bixley was awarded the Mallinson Rendel Illustrators Award, worth NZ$15,000 (A$13,393), which is presented every two years to a children’s book illustrator with published work of a high standard.

Novelist, short-story writer and playwright Carl Nixon was awarded the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship, which includes NZ$35,000 (A$31,251) to cover expenses during a residency in Menton, France.
