Spain to be guest of honour at 2021 Frankfurt Book Fair

Spain will be the guest of honour at the 2021 Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) 30 years after it first appeared as a guest of honour, reports Publishing Perspectives.

FBF director Juergen Boos said in a statement: ‘Spain, like many other European countries, is experiencing very turbulent times, revealing political tensions and a divergence of viewpoints. Cultural workers and writers face the particular challenge of not only illuminating and documenting these times, but also of reinterpreting them constructively and of building bridges.’

According to Publishing Perspectives, Spain will use its guest of honour status to showcase Spanish literature and strengthen Spain’s creative and cultural industries internationally. Its appearance as a guest of honour also ties in with the country’s program of reading promotion, which runs from 2017 to 2020.

Since 1976, FBF has hosted a guest of honour to showcase the literature and culture of a particular country or region. Upcoming guests of honour are Georgia (2018), Norway (2019) and Canada (2020).
