Waterstones to open five stores before Christmas

UK bookselling chain Waterstones will open five new bookstores before Christmas, including three that are named after their local area in the style of an independent bookshop, reports the Bookseller.

The other two stores, which will carry the Waterstones branding, will open in towns where Waterstones previously operated bookstores.

Waterstones MD James Daunt said: ‘We have been quietly sticking to our bookselling knitting, making our existing bookshops nicer and now opening new ones at an increasing clip. This brings us up to 20 opened in the last few years, all of them successful and fine testament to the enduring appeal of bookshops.’

Daunt told the Bookseller that there was no connection between the timing of the store openings and recent reports that the book chain is up for sale.
