Pan Mac UK acquires Cassandra Clare adult fantasy titles in seven-figure deal

YA author Cassandra Clare has signed a two-book, seven-figure deal with Pan Macmillan UK for her first fantasy novels for adults, reports the Guardian.

The first book Sword Catcher will follow ‘a young man raised to be the body double for an unworthy prince [and] a young woman destined to change the world’.

Pan Macmillan UK publisher Jeremy Trevathan and editorial director Bella Pagan acquired UK and Commonwealth (ex Canada) rights while North American rights were acquired by Del Rey.

Pagan told the Guardian: ‘You can’t put a value on talent of this sort, but because we’re a business we have to try.’ She added: ‘The value of brands of this sort can’t be underestimated … It is very brand-led in science fiction and fantasy, and it’s very difficult for debut authors to gain traction, so you need to have a mix of high-status writers, and new ones.’

Sword Catcher will be published in 2021 following Clare’s ‘current commitments’.
