Hinkler and Bookoli launch mass-market UK publisher

Melbourne-based children’s publisher Hinkler Books and UK children’s publisher Bookoli are launching a new mass-market publisher based in the UK.

Curious Universe UK, which is the result of a 50-50 joint venture between the two companies, will publish adult books, children’s titles and stationery for the UK, Irish and co-edition markets when it launches next month.

Bookoli founder and CEO John Styring will take on the role of CEO of the new company, which will be based in Bath in the UK. Existing Bookoli and Hinkler UK staff members will become part of the new company, with new recruits expected to join existing staff members to grow the team.

‘When we started talking to Stephen Ungar and Nadika Garber at Hinkler, it quickly became apparent that this would be a perfect match,’ said Styring. ‘With our experience in running a leading mass-market publisher from here in the UK, and the creative genius and wealth of successful products from Hinkler, we believe the Curious Universe UK brand will be a very strong proposition. The Bookoli and Hinkler lists very much complement each other.’

Hinkler Books CEO and publisher Stephen Ungar described the move as a ‘unique opportunity to attract the best of the best people in our industry and to construct a global entrepreneurial publishing powerhouse’.

Curious Universe told the Bookseller that children’s books will continue to be published under the Bookoli brand as well as the Curious Universe brand.
