PRH India buys Hindi-language publisher Hind Pocket Books

Penguin Random House India has acquired Hind Pocket Books, one of the oldest and best-known Hindi-language publishers in India, reports the Bookseller.

Established in 1958, Hind Pocket Books predominantly publishes paperbacks in Hindi and Urdu, as well as literary fiction, spirituality, health, biography and books in translation.

PRH, which began its Hindi publishing program in India in 2005, says the acquisition will build further on the company’s own local-language publishing program.

PRH India senior vice president Nandan Jha will expand his role to add responsibility for building the Indian-language publishing program, in addition to heading sales and product for the company. Vaishali Mathur, who was previously responsible for Indian language publishing and rights at PRH India, will become editor-in-chief of Hind Pocket Books, and will also continue to build her English-language publishing program.

PRH CEO Markus Dohle said the Hind Pocket Books purchase is in line with the company’s strategy of international growth. Our operations in India have been a success story for us, and this acquisition represents our commitment to expand our local-language publishing as we continue to implement our global strategy of growing in our key markets such as India,’ said Dohle in a statement.
