‘A Ghost in My Suitcase’ adapted for stage

Gabrielle Wang’s novel for younger readers, A Ghost in My Suitcase (Puffin), has been adapted to a theatre production and will premiere at the Playhouse Arts Centre Melbourne from October 18-21 as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

The story is about 12-year-old Celeste, who arrives in China to scatter her mother’s ashes, but is thrust into a world of magic and adventure. Celeste’s grandmother has carried on the family tradition of ghost catching and Celeste soon discovers she is also quite good at it.

The novel has been adapted by Perth-based Barking Gecko Theatre Company and is directed by Matt Edgerton and Ching Ching Ho. The company previously produced theatre adaptions of The Rabbits (John Marsden & Shaun Tan, Lothian), Jasper Jones (Craig Silvey, A&U), Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories (Reinhardt Jung, Yearling) and Storm Boy (Colin Thiele, New Holland).

A Ghost in My Suitcase was first published in 2009 and won the award for best children’s long fiction at the Aurealis Awards. Penguin Random House will publish a sequel to the book, Ting Ting the Ghosthunter, in September.
