Text announces Michael Gifkins Prize for an unpublished novel shortlist

Text Publishing and the New Zealand Society of Authors have announced the shortlist for the 2019 Michael Gifkins Prize for an unpublished novel.

The three manuscripts and their authors are:

  • ‘Into the Green Fields’ by Susan Paterson
  • ‘The City’ by Tom Remiger
  • ‘Isobar Precinct’ by Angelique Kasmara.

The shortlist was chosen from nearly 100 entries. The winner will be chosen by a judging panel comprising novelist Patricia Grace, former Penguin NZ publishing director Geoff Walker and Text Publishing representatives, and will be announced at an Auckland Writers Festival event on 18 May.

The prize offers the winning author a NZ$10,000 (A$9,430) advance and publishing contract with Melbourne’s Text Publishing. Open to both previously published and new writers who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, the prize honours the late Michael Gifkins—literary agent, writer, critic and publishing consultant. It is funded through a sponsorship from Gifkins’ family and Text Publishing.

In 2018, Ruby Porter won the inaugural Michael Gifkins Prize for her novel Attraction.
