Octopus buys indie publisher Short Books

Octopus Publishing Group, part of Hachette Livre, has acquired independent publisher Short Books for an undisclosed sum, reports the Bookseller.

Best known for health and diet publishing, Short Books has seen recent sales success through titles by diet book author Michael Mosley. Publishers Rebecca Nicolson and Aurea Carpenter—ex-journalists who founded the independent publisher in 2001—will continue in their roles, and Short Books will remain intact as a company, with Octopus’ purchase structured as a 100% shareholding in the business.

Mosley’s The Fast Diet (co-authored with Mimi Spencer), has achieved worldwide sales of more than 2 million since it was published in 2013. His latest book, The Fast 800, published in Australia by Simon & Schuster, has already sold more than 100,000 copies in Australia since it was published in January 2019.

The acquisition follows a number of other recent acquisitions by Hachette, including Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Summersdale and ebook publisher Bookouture, .
