Melbourne Spoken Word & Poetry Festival program announced

The program for the 2019 Melbourne Spoken Word & Poetry Festival, running from 12–28 July, has been announced.

More than 60 events will be held at bookshops, libraries, cafes and spoken word venues across Melbourne, as well as one-off events in Geelong and Ballarat.

The festival’s opening night event at The Toff will be headlined by Luka Lesson and will feature Eleanor Jackson, Andy Jackson, Stephanie Dogfoot Chan, Natalie Jeffreys, Arielle Cottingham and Zaynab Farah. The closing night party at Howler will feature US poets Mic Ting and Bill Moran, plus Rania Ahmed, John Englezos, Tenda McFly and Claire Gaskin.

Other special events include the trans poetry slam; dramatis personae—where poets take on the personas of famous dead poets; piano and the poet, with pianist Meena Shamaly; and a National Poetry Slam team event with Team Slama and Bankstown Poetry Slam.

The program reveal comes after the festival launched a successful crowdfunding campaign, the money from which was needed to pay upfront printing and venue booking costs before organisers could begin to sell tickets.

The inaugural festival was held last year. For more information about the Melbourne Spoken Word & Poetry Festival, visit the website.
