National Book Award 2019 fiction longlist announced

In the US, the National Book Award fiction longlist has been announced.

The finalists in the fiction category are:

  • Fleishman Is in Trouble (Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Wildfire)
  • Trust Exercise (Susan Choi, Serpent’s Tail)
  • Sabrina & Corina: Stories (Kali Fajardo-Anstine, One World)
  • Black Leopard, Red Wolf (Marlon James, Michael Joseph)
  • The Other Americans (Laila Lalami, Bloomsbury)
  • Black Light: Stories (Kimberly King Parsons, Vintage)
  • The Need (Helen Phillips, Viking)
  • Disappearing Earth (Julia Phillips, Scribner)
  • On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong, Jonathan Cape)
  • The Nickel Boys (Colson Whitehead, Fleet).

The fiction longlist was the final category to be announced, following the announcements of the longlists for nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people’s literature.  The shortlists will be announced on 8 October, with the winners to be announced 20 November.
