The Co-op loses Australian Geographic brand

Textbook retailer The Co-op has lost the rights to use the Australian Geographic brand, reports the Sydney Morning Herald, with a total of 64 former Australian Geographic stores set to trade under the new name My Geographic.

Canadian broadcasting and media company Blue Ant Media, which bought the Australian Geographic brand last year, recently announced it had terminated the licensing agreement with the Co-op, in order to focus on ‘expanding the brand in new directions more aligned with its core values’.

The member-owned Co-op bought the Australian Geographic chain in 2016 from then owner Myer Family Investments, after posting losses for several years. The Australian Geographic brand has since been used as the ‘growth platform’ of the business, with The Co-Op and Australian Geographic recently ranking 378th in IBISWorld’s Top 500 Private Companies List, with revenue of $153.55 million in FY2019.
