RELX Group named world’s largest publisher
RELX Group—formerly known as Reed Elsevier—has been named the world’s largest publishing company on Livres Hebdo/Publishers Weekly’s annual ranking for 2018.
RELX posted publishing revenue of US$5.28 billion (A$7.8b) to move into the top spot—a six percent drop on the previous year, due to declining sales in the company’s legal division. About 74% of RELX’s revenue came from sales of digital content.
Pearson fell to second spot, with publishing revenue down 14% in 2018, due to the impact of divestitures and currency movements, and declines in the company’s US K-12 and higher education courseware divisions. ThomsonReuters is the third largest book publisher, followed by Bertelsmann and Wolters Kluwer.
Revenue was down for seven of the world’s top 10 publishers, due to falling revenue in the higher educations markets. Despite this, the top 10 companies accounted for slightly over half of the total revenue of the 56 publishers ranked, which is similar to results over the past decade.
