Former Macmillan Education staff launch new educational publisher

Former staff from Macmillan Education Australia’s school division have formed a new educational publishing company called Matilda Education.

After Macmillan Education Australia announced in August that it would withdraw its schools division from the Australian market, a team of former managers acquired ‘key’ primary and secondary titles from Macmillan Education and launched the independent company.

Greg Browne, who served as managing director of Macmillan Education Australia until August, is the executive director of the new publisher, and the Matilda team comprises around 10 staff members, who are mostly former Macmillan staff. Browne told Books+Publishing that the company is looking to ‘grow modestly’ over the next 12 months.

‘The team at Matilda Education brings together a wealth of experience, publishing creativity and a history of close collaboration with practicing classroom teachers,’ said Browne. ‘Our overriding objective is to help teachers teach and our business will be focused on their needs. We are excited to introduce Matilda Education to the market and look forward to building a new future for these well-known education titles.’

Emma Bourne, managing director of Macmillan Education’s schools division said: ‘We are very happy that these titles have found a new home with Matilda Education and we wish them all the best with their new venture.’

Matilda Education titles will be distributed by UBD.
