PRH Spain introduces online direct sales platform

In Spain, Penguin Random House (PRH) has launched Mugustaleer, a direct sales ecommerce platform for print books, after several weeks of country-wide lockdown measures that have included bookshop closures.

Ten percent of the sales made on Mugustaleer will go towards a fund for €10 coupons, to be raffled in July among people who have purchased a book through the platform.

While the site has launched using the hashtag #savethebookstores, Javier Celaya, CEO of Spanish book trade publication Dosdoce, notes that ‘many booksellers believe PRH is taking advantage of the lack of print sales due to the lockdown to test the effectiveness, resources needed and revenue derived from a direct sales ecommerce platform’.

Previously, the PRH website only directed readers to Spain’s major print retail channels. Ebooks and audiobooks sales are still redirected to the main online retailers such as Amazon, Kobo and Apple.
