PW launches #BooksAreEssential campaign

US trade publication Publishers Weekly (PW) has launched a new social media campaign to promote the importance of books.

The #BooksAreEssential hashtag was created in response to the shutdown of all but ‘essential’ businesses in the US as part of Covid-19 lockdown measures. According to a statement from PW, ‘Now more than ever, books are essential to the health, well-being, education and entertainment of our society and culture.’

Starting Monday, 20 April, readers are encouraged to take a picture of themselves peering out over a book held open in the manner of an N95 surgical mask and post it to social media using the #BooksAreEssential hashtag.

PW editor Jim Milliot said the hashtag will be used to drive a series of initiatives to promote the importance of books, while PW is also working with US trade organisations to coordinate a ‘social media blitz’ in support of independent publishers.
