UK, North American bodies form green book supply chain alliance

The UK’s Book Industry Communication (BIC) has formed an international green book supply chain alliance with Canada’s BookNet and US body the Book Industry Study Group, reports the Bookseller.

Under the alliance the groups will share information, undertake joint planning and host environmental events, among other initiatives. They will explore projects including an accreditation system, an annual green global supply chain award, and the development of a central resource for environmental information and ideas.

BIC executive director Karina Urquhart said: ‘It is in the supply chain that the most significant changes can be made by the global book industry to eliminate waste and reduce its impact on the environment. It is vital that international supply chain organisations collaborate, and the US, UK and Canada are set to provide leadership in this critical area.’

Urquhart added that the alliance would work on elements of greening the global supply chain that could be shared and adopted across territories. ‘There will always be elements of local initiatives, and market-specific concerns that may not be appropriate for wider consideration or adoption,’ Urquhart said. ‘We’ll shine a light on them, but the differences in our markets will be embraced and acknowledged.’
