‘Mophead’ takes PANZ Book Design Awards hat-trick

The winners of the 2020 Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ) Book Design Awards have been announced.

Mophead by Selina Tusitala Marsh (Auckland University Press) took a hat-trick at the awards, scooping the overall award for best book, the award for best children’s book and the people’s choice award.

The winning titles in each category are:

Gerard Reid Award for Best Book

  • Mophead (Selina Tusitala Marsh, Auckland University Press), designed by Vida Kelly, Vida and Luke Kelly Design

Best illustrated book

  • We Are Here: An atlas of Aotearoa (Chris McDowall & Tim Denee, Massey University Press), designed by Tim Denee

Best non-illustrated book

  • Hell Fire Poetry Anthology 2017–18 (ed by Andy Coyle, White Wolf Black Rabbit in association with Ilam Press), designed by Aaron Beehre

Best commercial book for adults

  • Garage Project: The Art of Beer (Garage Project, PRH NZ), cover designed by Tim Gibson, interior by Tim Gibson & Katrina Duncan

Best children’s book

  • Mophead (Selina Tusitala Marsh, Auckland University Press), designed by Vida Kelly, Vida and Luke Kelly Design

Best educational book or series—primary

PANZ People’s Choice Award

  • Mophead (Selina Tusitala Marsh, Auckland University Press), designed by Vida Kelly, Vida and Luke Kelly Design.

The best commercial book for adults category, sponsored by Allen & Unwin, was added this year to ‘acknowledge the innovative work being done in this area of the market and extend the discussion around book design’.
