Pre-Christmas sales up, Giggs wins ALA Carnegie Medal

Book sales in Australia were up 17.5% in the 10 weeks to 5 December 2020, data from Nielsen BookScan shows.

Rebecca Giggs won the American Library Association’s (ALA) Andrew Carnegie Medal, for her nonfiction book Fathoms. Meanwhile, Ultimo Press has announced a new poetry and short fiction prize. In other news from the past week, Fremantle Press has launched a new podcast for writers, and Nic Low joined the Christchurch WORD festival.

Overseas, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced he’s stepping down to the role of executive chairman. In the UK, major publishers’ ebook sales were up 15% in 2020, while Waterstones staff are petitioning for a furlough raise.
