Evans, Chun, Dabarera win Australian Picture Book Illustrator Awards

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) has announced the winners of the inaugural Australian Picture Book Illustrator Awards.

The winners in each category are:

Established Illustrator Award ($8000)

  • Gabriel Evans
  • Honour Award: Trace Balla ($1500)
  • Honour Award: Emma Quay ($1500)

Developing Illustrator Award ($5000)

  • Matt Chun

Emerging Illustrator Award ($2000)

  • Dinalie Dabarera.

The judges for the inaugural awards were Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers art director Laurent Linn, HarperCollins Australia children’s publisher Lisa Berryman, Allen & Unwin children’s publisher Anna McFarlane and Berbay Publishing publisher Nancy Conescu.

Supported by the Copyright Agency and managed by SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand, the awards recognise the talent of PAL-published Australian children’s illustrators in visual narrative for picture books and graphic novels from early childhood to young adult.
