Romei steps down as literary editor

The Australian newspaper’s literary editor Stephen Romei has left the role, with his last column published in the newspaper on Saturday, 3 April.

‘I have decided to step back from this job as the Australian’s literary editor,’ wrote Romei in his final column. ‘As we live in a world awash with rumour and speculation, much of it shy of the truth, I want to emphasise that this is 100 percent my decision.’

Fellow Australian journalist James Madden noted, ‘Romei sees the next chapter of his life only as “semi-retirement”. He will continue to contribute to Review, but daily deadlines are now a thing of the past.’

‘I intend to remain part of the literary world and I hope you will see my name in this newspaper and elsewhere, as a freelance writer on books and writers,’ wrote Romei. ‘I am sure my successor will approach the role with the passion it deserves. I wish them the best.’
