The inaugural Ultimo Prize was open to writers between the ages of 18 and 30 writing on the theme of ‘identity’. Entries were assessed by the publisher’s editorial staff alongside Ultimo authors Claire G Coleman, who judged poetry, and Shankari Chandran, who judged fiction.

‘I was so excited to read the poetry entries for the Ultimo prize,’ said Coleman. ‘The writers and their work were culturally diverse, their works powerful, their language experimental and compelling. It was challenging to choose just 15 works from the entries and everybody, even those who did not succeed in making the list, should be congratulated on the quality and courage of their works.’

The Ultimo Prize Anthology will be published on 17 November 2021.
