Welbeck to launch Australian subsidiary, Booker Prize longlist

Independent UK publisher Welbeck is establishing a new standalone Australian subsidiary in partnership with Booktopia, with aims to publish 50 local titles a year.

The NT Writers Festival has launched the program for this year’s event, which runs from 26–29 August, while Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Writing WA have announced a partnership festival to be held in Perth in October.

In awards news, the shortlists for the Davitt Awards, the Furphy Literary Award, the Mary Gilmore Award and the Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize have been announced. Meanwhile, the KSP residencies recipients were revealed, and this year’s Scarlet Stilettos are offering a record amount of prize money.

Overseas, the longlist for the Booker Prize has been announced, while in the US, Scholastic reported a 13% drop in sales for the most recent financial year.
