NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults 2021 winners announced

The winners of the 2021 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults have been announced.

The winning titles in each category are:

Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award (NZ$7500)

  • Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea (T K Roxborogh, illus by Phoebe Morris, Huia Publishers)

Picture Book Award (NZ$7500)

  • Kōwhai and the Giants (Kate Parker, Mary Egan Publishing)

Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction (NZ$7500): 

  • Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea (T K Roxborogh, illus by Phoebe Morris, Huia Publishers)

Young Adult Fiction Award (NZ$7500) 

  • The Pōrangi Boy (Shilo Kino, Huia Publishers)

Elsie Locke Award for Nonfiction (NZ$7500)

  • Egg and Spoon: An illustrated cookbook (Alexandra Tylee, illus by Giselle Clarkson, Gecko Press)

Russell Clark Award for Illustration (NZ$7500)

  • Hare & Ruru: A quiet moment (Laura Shallcrass, Beatnik Publishing)

Wright Family Foundation Te Kura Pounamu Award for te reo Māori (NZ$7500)

  • Ngake me Whātaitai (Ben Ngaia, illus by Laya Mutton-Rogers, Huia Publishers)

Best First Book Award (NZ$2000)

  • Kōwhai and the Giants (Kate Parker, Mary Egan Publishing).

The winners, chosen from shortlists released in June, were announced on 11 August.
