‘The Unforgiven’ wins Cricket Society & MCC Book of the Year

Ashley Gray’s The Unforgiven (Pitch Publishing) has won the Cricket Society and MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) Book of the Year award, presented at a ceremony at Lords Cricket Ground in London on 20 October.

The Unforgiven tells the story of the 20 West Indies cricketers who toured apartheid South Africa in the 1980s, and were shunned upon their return to the Caribbean. It was also shortlisted for the 2020 UK-based William Hill Sports Book of the Year award.

Chair of judges Robert Winder commended the book for ‘telling the little-known stories of a group of cricketers who truly never were forgiven their choices, in contrast to their English and Australian counterparts’. Following the relaxation of restrictions on travel from Australia, Gray was able to accept the award in person.

The award has been run by the Cricket Society since 1970 and in partnership with MCC since 2009, and is for books nominated by MCC and Cricket Society members. For more information, click here.
