NBCC Awards finalists announced

In the US, the shortlists for the 2021 National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Awards have been announced.

The finalists include:

Fiction

  • The Netanyahus (Joshua Cohen, NYRB)
  • Second Place (Rachel Cusk, Faber)
  • Burntcoat (Sarah Hall, Faber)
  • The Love Songs of W.E.B DuBois (HonorĂ©e Fanonne Jeffers, Fourth Estate)
  • Harlem Shuffle (Colson Whitehead, Fleet)

Nonfiction

  • Empire of Pain: The secret history of the Sackler dynasty (Patrick Radden Keefe, Picador)
  • The Family Roe: An American story (Joshua Prager, Norton)
  • The Least of Us: True tales of America and hope in the time of fentanyl and meth (Sam Quinones, Bloomsbury)
  • How the Word Is Passed (Clint Smith, Dialogue Books)
  • Orwell’s Roses (Rebecca Solnit, Granta).

Shortlists were also announced in the categories of autobiography, biography, criticism, poetry, as well as for the John Leonard Prize for Best First Book. To view the full list of finalists in each category, visit the NBCC website.

The winners will be announced in a virtual ceremony on 17 March.
