BookUp full 2022 program announced

The Australian Publishers Association (APA) has released the full program for the one-day BookUp publishing conference, to be held in Sydney next Thursday, 9 June, ahead of the Australian Book Industry Awards.

Sessions include conversations with respective 2022 Lloyd O’Neil and Pixie O’Harris Hall of Fame inductees Sandy Grant and Libby Hathorn, as well as a session featuring this year’s Rising Star nominees.

An ‘ask me anything’ panel will feature HarperCollins CEO Jim Demetriou, Walker Books publisher Clare Hallifax, Affirm Press publishing director Martin Hughes, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment managing director Mark O’Neil. Industry members are invited to submit questions to the panel, which will be hosted by journalist Melanie Kembrey.

A session on opening and reaching new markets will feature Shalini Kunahlan of Hardie Grant, the APA’s Anna Burkey on Australia Reads, Jeremy Neal of Simon & Schuster on exploring the best approaches in marketing and sales to reach new or emerging audiences, and Australian BookTokker Jayden Kouli on ‘how to fuel TikTok and online book club success’.

As previously reported, vice president and chief diversity officer at Hachette Book Group Carrie Bloxson will explore approaches to creating more diverse, inclusive and equitable organisations, while NSW Australian of the Year 2022 Veena Sahajwalla will discuss revolutionising recycling. Sahajwalla will present fresh approaches to sustainability and the circular economy in a session on greening the industry, at which Kathy Bail (UNSW Press) will report on the work of the APA’s Sustainability Working Group and outline the next steps for the industry in a session on greening the industry.
