‘This year’s longlists explore a diverse range of powerful themes, from reinvention and the meaning of truth, through to mischievous, fast-paced fables and the recasting of literary classics,’ said the organisation.

‘The longlists demonstrate the power of historical fiction to bring the past vividly to life, explore often unspoken truths, and illuminate the challenges faced by humankind throughout the centuries.’

Worth a total of $100,000, the Historical Novel Prize will award $50,000 to the adult category winner and $30,000 to the CYA category. The four remaining shortlisted authors across both categories will each receive $5000. The addition of the CYA category last year makes the prize the richest genre-based literary award in the Australasia region.

The shortlisted titles will be announced on 28 September, with the winners to be announced on 20 October. Jock Serong was the adult category winner and Katrina Nannestad the inaugural CYA category winner in last year’s prize.
