Parker-Chan wins two British Fantasy Awards

Australian writer Shelley Parker-Chan has won two categories at the 2022 British Fantasy Awards.

Parker-Chan took out both best fantasy novel and best newcomer for She Who Became the Sun (Tor), a genderqueer reimagining of the rise to power of the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor. The Melbourne-based author also recently won best new writer at the Hugo Awards for science fiction in Chicago.

Other winners at this year’s British Fantasy Awards included Luna Press Publishing for best independent press; The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag (Graphix) for best comic/graphic novel; Never Have I Ever by Isabel Yap (Small Beer Press) for best collection; and The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward (Viper Books) for best horror novel.

Shortlists for the British Fantasy Awards are voted on by members of the society and FantasyCon, who can each nominate up to six finalists in each category. The winners are chosen by a jury made up of writers, booksellers and publishing employees.

The winners were announced last week as part of FantasyCon. For more information, and to view the full list of winners, see the British Fantasy Awards website.
