Aus Political Book of the Year 2022 longlist announced

The longlist for the inaugural Australian Political Book of the Year Award has been announced.

The longlisted titles, selected from over 35 nominations by judging panel Laurie Oakes, Laura Tingle, and John Warhurst, are:

  • Bob Hawke: Demons and destiny (Troy Bramston, Viking)
  • The Game: A portrait of Scott Morrison (Sean Kelly, Black Inc.)
  • Telling Tennant’s Story: The strange career of the great Australian silence (Dean Ashenden, Black Inc.)
  • No Enemies, No Friends: Restoring Australia’s global relevance (Allan Behm, Upswell Publishing)
  • The Brilliant Boy: Doc Evatt and the great Australian dissent (Gideon Haigh, Scribner)
  • Sold Down The River: How robber barons and Wall Street traders cornered Australia’s water market (Scott Hamilton and Stuart Kells, Text)
  • Keeping Them Honest: The case for a genuine national integrity commission and other vital democratic reforms (Stephen Charles & Catherine Williams, Scribe)
  • Waiting for Gonski: How Australia failed its schools (Tom Greenwell & Chris Bonnor, NewSouth)
  • Rogue Forces: An explosive insiders’ account of Australian SAS War Crimes in Afghanistan (Mark Willacy, S&S)
  • The Idea of Australia: A search for the soul of the nation (Julianne Schultz, A&U).

The shortlist for the award will be announced on 24 October 2022. Shortlisted authors will be invited to the National Press Club in Canberra, on 9 November 2022, where the winner will be announced by federal treasurer Jim Chalmers.
