US bookstore sales rise 6%

In the US, bookstore sales rose an estimated 6.2% last year over 2021 according to preliminary estimates from the US Census Bureau, reports Publishers Weekly.
According to US Census Bureau data, bookshop sales totalled US$9 billion (A$13.2b) in 2022, up from US$8.47 billion (A$12.3b) in 2021. The figure was also marginally higher than that recorded in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, when sales totalled US$8.93 billion (A$12.9b).
The entire US retail sector was up 9.2% in 2022. Book sales in December 2022 were up 1.9% on the same month the previous year, while total retail sales were up 5.2% for December compared to 2021.
