US publishing sales down 6.4%: AAP
US publishers’ sales fell 6.4% in 2022, according to the latest data from the Association of American Publisher’s StatShot program, reports Publishers Weekly.
Sales totalled US$12.6 billion (A$18.7b) from the 1372 publishers that report data, down from US$13.5 billion (A$20.1b) in 2021. Sales were down in all publishing categories, including adult book sales (down 6.4%) and children’s/YA (down 5.7%). Religion titles were down 6.1%, professional books declined 5.5% and higher educational course materials fell 10.3%.
The trade segment’s decline was due in large part to hardcover sales, which fell 16.2%. Trade paperback sales grew 3.7%. In the digital category, audiobooks sales grew 7.9% while ebook sales fell 5.5%.
As previously reported, NPD BookScan data found US sales of print books were up 6.5% in 2022 compared to 2021.
