BookPeople releases sustainability report

BookPeople, formerly the Australian Booksellers Association, has released its industry sustainability report, Towards a Sustainable Bookselling Future.

Written by publisher and author Angela Meyer, the report outlines key areas of concern for booksellers both as part of the wider book industry, including carbon emissions and other environmental impacts from freight and printing, as well as issues related specifically to retailing, including energy consumption, packaging and merchandising materials.

‘We provide this paper as a baseline for understanding our own complex ecosystem, the problems we face and the potential for solutions,’ says BookPeople CEO Robbie Egan. ‘Angela Meyer has done a wonderful job, and her work provides us with a starting point for serious enquiry into what we can do individually and collectively to improve the way we conduct our businesses.’

The paper is available to download from the BookPeople website and the organisation welcomes feedback. ‘We will collate [booksellers’] experiences and ideas to build a model of best practice for Australian bookshops,’ says Egan. ‘All of us at BookPeople are incredibly passionate about this paper, and look forward to engaging with the industry in seeking better outcomes for us all.’
