BookPeople announces 2023 conference program

BookPeople has released a draft of program for its 2023 conference and trade exhibition, to be held on 18-19 June in Adelaide.

Keynotes include journalist and author Julia Baird on her forthcoming book Bright Shining: How grace changes everything for the opening of the conference on Sunday; Suzie Miller on her forthcoming novel Prima Facie prior to dinner; and author Richard Flanagan speaking about his forthcoming book Question 7 at the gala dinner. On Monday morning, children’s picture book author Mem Fox will share her ‘passion for the magic of books and their power to change lives’ and also be a part of the morning tea session. A yet-to-be-named keynote speaker, who ‘embodies an inspiring message of never giving up’, will speak on the closing night.

Sunday sessions include Bianca Whiteley’s presentation of the Nielsen state of the industry report; Fraser Tanner’s talk about the Batch payments system in UK;  Jared Thomas on being ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation; and debut author Molly Schmidt in conversation with Melissa Lucashenko and David Marr,

On Monday, a children’s bookselling session will focus on ‘engaging with diversity and First Nations’; a number of yet-to-be-announced panelists will talk on selling genre fiction; nonfiction authors will talk on a panel about ‘the cost of telling and selling the story’; a panel of booksellers will discuss the business of bookselling; Australian Publishers Association head of communications Anna Burkey will talk about Australia Reads; a Creative Lives panel will feature authors Clare Bowditch, Deborah Conway and Wendy Harmer; and a marketing session will feature Andrew Ritchie, Robbie Egan and David Parritt, who will focus on customer loyalty.

The BookPeople member forum and Annual General Meeting will be held on the Sunday afternoon and the annual book industry forum chaired by Robbie Egan will run on the Monday afternoon.

The annual BookPeople bookseller and book awards will be announced at the gala dinner on the Sunday night. Nominations for the awards will open in early April. Information about the awards can be found here.
