Publisher, Melbourne

Cambridge University Press

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Publisher to help us continue to grow our award-winning list of textbooks and digital content for the university market. This is an exciting role that works with authors (primarily university lecturers) to develop cutting-edge resources for contemporary learners.

About the role

The purpose of the role is to orchestrate high impact publishing of teaching and learning resources for the university market and to manage a large and successful portfolio of textbooks and digital resources and their authors. The role works closely with a highly collaborative and talented team of professionals across sales, marketing, and content operations locally and with platform teams globally. It reports to the Publishing and Marketing Director and has management responsibility for one Editor.

The role is responsible for:

  • commissioning high impact resources that meet market needs and respond innovatively to market trends;
  • working with the Publishing Director to set the content strategy in a changing market-place;
  • conducting and leading others to conduct market research in support of new product development;
  • managing the portfolio backlist, ensuring we extend our market reach with new editions;
  • managing and motivating development editors assigned to your list to reach their individual and team potential and business objectives;
  • communicating the vision and value of key products in the portfolio to all stakeholders;
  • liaising with authors and other university stakeholders to develop innovative new products and services.

About you

You are an experienced publisher or digital content developer with an excellent understanding of the market for teaching and learning content. You will:

  • Have a strong track record of publishing commercially successful learning resources;
  • Be a natural collaborator, able to establish and nurture relationships with authors and project stakeholders;
  • Have strong commercial acumen and demonstrated experience in developing project financial forecasts and managing project budgets;
  • Be able to work as part of a team and independently in exercising judgement and making decisions about all aspects of publishing projects;
  • Have a very good understanding of and working knowledge of author contracts and agreements;
  • Have an excellent understanding of and experience working with digital publishing tools and solutions.

Knowledge and experience in learning design would be highly desirable but is not essential.

While having had some line management experience is desirable, it’s not essential as we provide training and support for candidates new to line management.

This may be an opportunity for a mid-level publishing professional with education publishing experience who is looking to take on management responsibilities. It may also suit an experienced publisher who is looking to take full ownership of a successful, award winning list and make it their own.
