Two Sides to Every Story (Beck & Robin Feiner, ABC Books)
This vibrantly illustrated story by the team that brought us If I was Prime Minister is about weighing up the various options when decision making–a process that can be very challenging for young children (and some adults). It follows the character of Oscar, who likes to consider all the angles and possibilities before making a choice about many things, including what to have for breakfast, where to go for a day out, and what would be the best pet to own. When Oscar is invited to give a speech at the Aussie Schools Public Speaking Competition, he must first figure out what to wear (a spectacular suit is a fine choice) before he wows the audience with his mental gymnastics. Oscar’s ability to see all the aspects of a decision wins the trophy for his school. With striking vector art illustrations and charming, diverse characters, this is a quirky story that will be enjoyed by young children who regularly need to flex their decision-making muscles. It will get them thinking about the pros and cons of different choices they have to make on a daily basis. An entertaining picture book for ages 4 and up.
