The role of Publishing Manager is available for immediate start up to 30 June 2024 and will be filled via a labour-hire arrangement through a recruitment agency.

​The Publishing Manager will work in conjunction with the Director of Communications, Events and Publishing and the Aboriginal Studies Press team in the delivery of publishing outputs. This role will be responsible for developing and maintaining a variety of relationships with external stakeholders including with members within the publishing industry. This engagement with external stakeholders also extends to representing Aboriginal Studies Press at public events. This role requires someone with strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders as well as produce quality outputs. This role will also be responsible for leading teams and training staff when required. ​

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the administration and delivery of the Institute’s publishing program
  • ​​Develop, implement and manage the Aboriginal Studies Press’s business plan​
  • ​​Provide strong flexible leadership to Aboriginal Studies Press staff, fostering teamwork and initiative ​
  • ​​Represent Aboriginal Studies Press at meetings, forums, festivals, and other events when required​
  • ​​Maintain links with the Institute’s key stakeholders including Indigenous community groups and other organisations
  • ​Create and maintain publishing Industry links, particularly regarding marketing and distribution networks
  • ​Facilitate the provision of regular reports on Aboriginal Studies Press to the Institute’s Executives and Executive Board of Management
  • ​Actively contribute and provide input into marketing and communication strategies and plans including launches/events, author and book promotional activities, flyers, catalogues, newsletters, print, shop campaigns, social media and online media​
  • When required, engage with, and manage an external publicist to assist in the promotion and publicity of key Aboriginal Studies Press publications

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • demonstrated experience and ability to manage a publishing house or equivalent production company.
  • a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • a demonstrated ability to manage and sustain ASP as a leading publisher of Australian Indigenous studies.
  • demonstrated experience in managing external relationships and contractors, within available resources.
  • demonstrated high level inter-personal liaison and oral and written communication skills.
  • demonstrated skill and ability to effectively lead a team and manage competing priorities and timelines.
  • demonstrated high level appreciation of the important of Workplace Diversity, Workplace Relations and Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace.
