Writing NSW diverse writers mentorship 2023 recipients announced

Writing NSW has announced the nine recipients of its 2023 mentoring program for emerging writers from First Nations or culturally diverse backgrounds.

This year’s winners are:

  • Celine Eigner
  • Tamara Haque
  • Michelle Huynh
  • Andrew John
  • Teneale Lavender
  • Hiromi Matsuoka
  • Annie McCann
  • Guan Un
  • Cherry Zheng.

Eugen Bacon, a 2022 World Fantasy Award finalist, will mentor these nine emerging writers, who were selected from a pool of applicants working across a wide range of forms, including short stories, essays, prose poetry, novels and poetry.

Between September and December, each recipient will work on a short fiction or nonfiction work under Bacon’s guidance, with a view to preparing the piece for publication on the Writing NSW website or elsewhere. Recipients also receive membership and development opportunities from Writing NSW.

Bacon said: ‘I wish I had this opportunity when I was starting out as a writer, someone who looked and really saw, who considered my work seriously.’

The announcement comes ahead of the 2023 Boundless Festival—‘a biennial festival for Indigenous and culturally diverse writers presented by Writing NSW’—which features five free events across Western Sydney over the coming months.

More information about the mentorship program is available on the Writing NSW website.
