The Beehive (Megan Daley, illus Max Hamilton, Walker)
The Beehive is a new informational picture book by teacher-librarian and author Megan Daley and CBCA-shortlisted illustrator Max Hamilton. The two have combined their talents to create a charming and educational story about the native stingless bee. These prolific pollinators are crucial for many of the crops we eat, and as it turns out, they are also the favourite creature of young Willow, the protagonist of this delightful book. Along with groundskeeper Tom, Willow’s stepdad and her friends in the school’s nature club, Willow learns more about the native beehives, including how to split a hive so she can take one home. The book introduces readers to terms including propolis, brood nest and orientation flight, which are highlighted in an alternative font throughout the book and collated in a glossary. The dual text parallels Willow’s story with fascinating facts about Australia’s native bees, and is perfect for young people aged 5+ who are interested in nature and science. The sweet bee endpapers and endearing pictures of bee-loving Willow also work well alongside more detailed illustrations of native beehives, OATH boxes and brood comb, among others. The Beehive would be an excellent resource for families wishing to start their journey into beekeeping.
