Look Me in the Eye (Jane Godwin, Lothian)

Look Me in the Eye is the latest young adult novel by award-winning author Jane Godwin. The story centres around Bella, a 13-year-old girl who leads quite a wholesome, drama-free life. Bella and her BFF Connie are two peas in a pod—they have the same hobbies, are mutually supportive and love spending time together. That all changes when Connie’s cousin Mish comes to town. Mish is forced into their friendship group because they’ll be a ‘good influence’ on her. But Mish couldn’t be more out of place in their group—she steals, lies to her parents, and asks Bella and Connie to do things they’re uncomfortable with. Before long, things are out of control, and Bella finds herself in more trouble than she ever expected. Look Me in the Eye is an important novel that rings true to life. It tackles big themes relevant to tween readers: trust, friendship, mental health and disordered eating, the difference between privacy and secrecy, and coming to know yourself. It also tackles issues unique to younger generations: living through Covid lockdowns, navigating smartphones and surveillance, and handling climate anxieties. The book also has many cosy qualities that adults and tweens alike will enjoy, like ponies, crafts, hot chocolate, and whispered conversations with your BFF. Look Me in the Eye is a gentle and loving book for fans of The Peacock Detectives by Carly Nugent and Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.
