International Booker Prize 2024 shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2024 International Booker Prize, worth £50,000 (A$95,600), has been announced.

The titles in the running for this year’s prize, chosen from a longlist of 13 announced in March, are:

  • Crooked Plow (Itamar Vieira Junior, trans by Johnny Lorenz, Verso)
  • The Details (Ia Genberg, trans by Kira Josefsson, Wildfire Books)
  • Kairos (Jenny Erpenbeck, trans by Michael Hofmann, Granta)
  • Mater 2–10 (Hwang Sok-yong, trans by Sora Kim-Russell & Youngjae Josephine Bae, Scribe)
  • Not a River (Selva Almada, trans by Annie McDermott, Charco Press)
  • What I’d Rather Not Think About (Jente Posthuma, trans by Sarah Timmer Harvey, Scribe).

The winning title will be announced at a ceremony on 21 May.

The International Booker Prize is awarded to a book translated into English. The prize money is shared equally between the winning writer and translator, and each shortlisted writer and translator also receives £2500 (A$4780) each.

The winner of the 2023 prize was Time Shelter (Georgi Gospodinov, trans by Angela Rodel, Weidenfeld & Nicolson).
