NSW Premier’s History Awards 2024 winners announced

The winners of the 2024 NSW Premier’s History Awards, worth a total of $85,000, were announced on 6 September at the State Library of NSW (SLNSW) as part of NSW History Week.

The winning titles in each category, chosen from shortlists announced in August, are:

Australian history prize ($15,000)

  • Courting: An Intimate History of Love and the Law (Alecia Simmonds, La Trobe University Press)

General history prize ($15,000)

  • Systemic Silencing: Activism, Memory, and Sexual Violence in Indonesia (Katharine E McGregor, University of Wisconsin Press)

NSW regional and community history prize ($15,000)

  • Reaching Through Time: Finding My Family’s Stories (Shauna Bostock, A&U)

Young people’s history prize ($15,000)

  • Two Sparrowhawks in a Lonely Sky (Rebecca Lim, A&U)

Digital history prize ($15,000)

  • The Dark Emu Story (Allan Clarke, Jacob Hickey, Darren Dale & Belinda Mravicic, Blackfella Films & ABC)

Anzac Memorial trustees’ military history prize ($10,000)

  • Kriegies: The Australian Airmen of Stalag Luft III (Kristen Alexander, self-published).

‘Historians have the unique ability to resurrect the voices, moments and events of the past,’ said NSW Premier Chris Minns, adding: ‘We honour the exceptional dedication and achievements of our storytellers, whose research brings to light untold or overlooked histories and offers fresh perspectives that inspire future generations.’
